Golf Course Update March 20th

Happy Spring!!

The weather continues to be unseasonably warm and the golf course is slowly greening. The playing surfaces are dry and firm. The greens have been mowed three times and tees, collars and fairways have been mowed twice.
The weather for the next week looks favorable so I am planning to open greens and tees this Wednesday March 21, the second earliest opening ,(by 2 days), in my 35 years at Silver Spring. This is 10 days earlier than our traditional date of April 1st. Looks like Mother Nature has given us some bonus golf to start the 2012 season. We hope to have golf carts by the end of the week as well as the driving range. The opening of the range will depend on the completion of a project on the range mats scheduled for Thursday. Play will be restricted to Mats only.  The short game area will remain closed until there is sufficient growth for recovery.
The golf and grounds crew continues our spring cleanup and work has started on edging and raking bunkers. Work has also started on our irrigation system and tennis courts. Our crew has been busy.
There can still be some cold and rainy weather in store for us this spring. Any prolonged cold and wet conditions could force us to close the course for a short period of time.
We are continuing to monitor insect activity and soil temperatures. Our initial applications will probably move up in the schedule by 7 to 10 days. As soon as our irrigation system has been fully activated aerification of our greens and tees will take place. Tentatively we have scheduled aerification of greens the week of March 26th.
I will keep the membership informed of our aerification dates through email, and the dates will be posted on this blog.
